Hydraulic oil smell?
Its a new 06 and I am putting the miles on her. When I get out of the truck I smell what appears to be hydraulic fluid?. In the mornings with the defrost on I smell it again. Is this just a CTD thing?. It doesnt smell all of the time just usually in the mornings. Any ideas?
Did you get out and determine if the smell is coming from a particular area and just getting sucked into the cab by the heater/defroster? I had what I would call a hydraulic oil smell - but it also was a burnt hydraulic oil smell and ended up being a faulty axle seal allowing the rear diff oil to seep out and then get burned by the discs on the brakes.
It comes from the engine area. When I shut down I smell it and in the mornings with the heat on I smell it. I guess I have to bring it back to the dealer and let them figure it out. Thanks
If it's doing it with the defroster on, take a look underneath.....there are 2 heater lines that run right to the front of the tranny on the LEFT side (as you face the front).
I had to have mine replaced, as they were leaking......among other things.
Check this thread, it has the pics of the area I'm talking about.

Thanks for all the responses. I took it to the "stealer" today and the mechanic said the Cummins are built in england and the spray them with some chemical to keep them from getting corroded while shipping. He cleaned the block with something and the smell is now gone. He said that the dealership should have cleaned this when they took possesion and didnt. Dont know how true it is but whatever he did it worked. Thanks again, Vince.
