Default Winter snow is on its way..

I live in Indiana and snow is part of our winter. I just bought an '06 2500 CTD and in the rain I noticed it's not too difficult to fish tail my truck. How much weight do you recommend in the bed for daily commutes in the snow? Also, what do you guys use to weigh it down? Salt?

a few hunderd pounds of sand or blocks would work

just remember in the slippery stuff the torque of the engine begins at 750rpm

Please say it isn't so that winter is coming!!! [sm=boosign.gif] [sm=noooo.gif]

Better get back on track, I’ve owned several 1/2 tons and I never put anything in the back, the few times I did try it the rear would break away much faster and easier. But being the CTD has 10 times the power over my last dodge with the 4.7L, I may have to rethink this one and add some weight to it. If I do, I think I will use sand as it could come in handy. I have been told if you add weigh to your truck put it in front of the truck bed and not over the axels. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will be around to correct me.

My $0.02 worth

Charles, you are right, try and get as much as you can closest to the front of the bed. if you go behind the axel you'll be ok though.

Thanks Drew for letting me know the info was correct. I have not heard it was OK to have weight at the tail gate. I have not had to drive in snow much over the past 20 years but my get to in the next 48 hours or so said the weather man. Our wind chill has dropped to 20 but we should be back in to the upper 50's on Saturday. Guess I should go and top of my tank and add Winter PS to my fuel!

yeah the furthest to the front of the bed as possible. Because the farther aback you go it starts taking weight off the front. You want all the traction you can get in the front, for steering purposes.

Rear has a Detroit Tru-Trac, front will have the Eaton E locker installed by Halloween. I have an ARB air locker up front now. I don't like it. It has jammed up a few times. The compressor relay/electrical seemed to be weak too.

This is the Detroit.

is the trutrac helical geared? or is it clutched?

Thats one thing I will miss about my 98 gasser. I had a full detroit in the rear. It was awesome.
