I have a '06 2500 CTD Big Horn Edition Short Bed. I purchased 2.5 tons of flagstone from a family members quarry. He only sells wholesale, so I must pick it up myself. I'm trying to figure out how many trips it will take. The stone is palletized to around 1500 lbs on each pallet I believe (I will check). Anyone know where I can find info on the capacity of my truck bed? What's the most you guys have hauled?

 

Calculator says 5000lbs./1500 lbs.=3.33333333333333 trips. I'd think that it will handle 1500 lbs. Can you get a trailer? Probably haul alot easier and easier to unload, just my .02

payload depends on which truck you have: (not familiar with big horn) mega cab, long box, short box, 4x4/2wd, manual or auto gear ratio... you can haul anywhere from 1610 to 2250lbs.
Short box mega cab 4x4 with manual tranny and 3.73 hauls the lowest weight while the 2wd can haul 2040 to 2120lbs. The Q/C short box 4x4 can move 2170 to 2250lbs, the Q/C long box can carry 1990 to 2070lbs while the 2wd can carry about 500lbs more theb the 4x4. Manual trannys with 3.73 gears will haul less then the auto with 4.10 gears and again the 2wd will haul even more up to 500lbs moe then 4x4s.

If the pallets are 1500, I'd haul a pallet at a time. I know I have had over 2000 in the rear before.

 

True, you could make 3 trips, but if it was me, I'd borrow a trailer and take it all at once.... Sometimes you've got to do it just cause you can

 

Some one correct me if I'm wrong.

Go to a truck stop weigh the truck with fuel and you in it. Subtract that from 9000# (GVWR), that should be what you can carry.

 

one would think that, but GVWR is the total allowable weight of a fully equiped vehicle including driver, passengers, cargo fluids, accesories and tongue weight. Max GVWR and front and rear GAWRs (gross axel weight rating) must not be exceeded.

Example: 06 Q/C short box 2500 CTD with Manual, 3.73 gears - Has a GVWR of 9000lbs,
truck base curb weight 6830 lbs + payload 2170lbs = 9000lbs. Truck can haul 2170lbs, this 2170lbs is made up of driver, passengers, accesories, fuel or fluids, cargo and tongue weight ... (of course to be safe you should weigh the truck with driver, passengers ect ect, then subtract that weight from allowable payload to determine how much you can haul) hauling that 2170lbs in the box may excede the GAWR for the rear axel. Most importantly are you going to be able to stop the truck in an emergency with that much weight in the back? With the same truck, the maximum trailer weight is 13,000lbs. So with a combined GCWR(gross combination weight rating) of 20,000lbs leaves you with 7000lbs for your truck (and the truck has a base curb weight of 6830lbs) which in turn leaves you 170lbs of payload.... (payload again is the amount of weight that can be carried by a vehicle including driver, passengers, fluids, cargo, trailer tongue weight....) So, with only 170lbs of payload for a 13,000lb trailer whos gonna drive it because once fueled up and any accesories, which would have to be light weight doesn't leave much room for the driver! So cut back on trailer weight and make room for driver, passengers and the rest of the goodies and you'll be safe!

I know the CTD has the power to pull.... I've seen just way too many ppl pulling more then they should, sure ya can get her going forward but can ya stop it as easily as you can pull it?

I like gtxpooch, would get a trailer to haul yer load, be safer and easier on the truck! Unless you like draggin yer bumper.... [:@]

 

put it all in the bed and drive off. . .

you'll be squating pretty good but if you put enough to the front of the bed it'll help keep the front wheels planted on the asphalt.

 

I HAVE A 98.5 CTD, 4X4, UTILITY BOX, CAB OVER CAMPER, DID CALC, AFTER SCALE AT THE DUMPS. AND ABOUT 450LBS OVER GVW
AND BEEN ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, DARN TRUCK DON'T EVEN KNOW THE LOAD IS THERE. LICKING 10,000LBS +

I read some paper in my glove box and I think it said 2150. Just load a pallet at a time and you should be safe.
