I saw and narrowly missed getting hit by some 1-1/4 rope snapping. A mexican Navy ship came up to San Diego and I was on the pier when they pulled up. They threw us the line. we put it over the cleat. At this point the ship should drive forward causing the line to tighten and pull the ship into the pier. They drove a little hard and the line started "talking" to us. I dove for cover it let go and when it hit the concrete wall behind where I was, it took a baseball size chunk out. Judging from my experience I would not want to be around if cable that size let go.
