There should be enough room to lift the piston and rod out, if not there is enough room to pull the wrist pin and just remove the piston. Unless the bodies differ so much from the gen 2's. But if you got the head off, you should at least be able to pull the wrist pin.

I have a '99 3500 and I burnt a #6; believe the culprit was a FRAM oil filter. To the point - yes, it can be changed without removing the engine (at least on a '99). After the head and the pan are removed, you can get to it. Tight work, but beats pulling that heavy ***** out of the truck. By the way, mine burnt at 95k and no trouble since - 160k now.

Ignorance is bliss, untill you wake up and smell the roses.

I was under the misunderstanding that Fram filters were of the "preferred" brand of filters to be used.

We should have a section in the FAQ's for the ignorant among us as to the "better brands" as far as filters lubricants, coolants etc.
This has been a most informative site to me and slowly the "scales are falling from the eyes."

( if it is there, my apologies, but have not had to research this as yet, 6,100mls - dealer did the 1st oil dump at 2,500mls.)

Thanks

I would run Chevron delo 400 15w/40 and use fleetgaurd filters. Run it easy for about 5000 or first oil change. Then load it down as much as you want to help get the rings seated.

Fleetguard filters are the best to use with the truck. Donaldson filters are also good to use. . stay away from fram when it comes to this engine.
