Default Help, Front Diff

PM’ed Steve but got no reply so I have to ask here. Does anyone know how many qt’s of gear oil it takes for the front diff? I just changed the rear and it took just over 4.5 qt’s and not the 3.75 I had been told. The online manual shows the front as being a 9.5 and it only takes 2.3 qt’s. To me the front looks about the same size as the rear. I want to make sure I have enough gear oil before I take the front cover off. Can't drive it low on oil to go get more if I don't have enough.

Just keep filling the diff till the oil runs out of the fill hole. Make sure the truck is level first. My 95' takes almost 2 gallons in the rear with a Dana 80 and a Detroit locker. And always check the vent tubing as well.

Hope this helps.

Glad I went to town and bought and extra qt amd I'm gals i did so as it took a total of 7.5 qt's to do both. Being the front had 14 bolts I assume it's 10.5 inch ( the rear has 16 bolts = 11.5 inch)and not a 9.5 inch like the online manual said. Anyway it took just under 3 qt's to fill the front and just over 4.5 qt's for the rear.

I could of run the oil in the front for at least another 20,000 miles as I could see through it when it drained. Also the rear was a light grey in color and 3 times darker then the front. I was surprised that the front axel oil was so clean as when I changed the diff in my old 05 1500 it was almost black and it had only 4500 miles on it at the time.

Drew,

Did you pull of diff cover or just pump it out? Also if you took it off, then does that mean you have a 9.5 inch front axel? Was surprised to see that the online manual that I downloaded only showed two different 9.5 inch diff's.

Any who how I'm glad both are now filled with Amsoil severe gear oil and all will be fine for may miles to come
