Duramax or Cummins
actualy the duramax is a purpose built diesel. with aluminum heads. it uses the same injection system our dodges use, but two more injectors and two rails instead of one. the older duramax's had a nasty habit of the block cracking in two when punched past 750 horse. the newer ones have internal gussetting to help with that.
Now about the aluminum heads. Ford uses them as well, and once they overheat and warp, they are shot. they do make for a more light weight diesel that can rev higher, but you sacrafice overall engine life. Cummins uses cast iron for the head on the ISBe's it can absorb WAY more heat then aluminum, and is also more durable giving longer life.
I drove all three before I bought mine. all three have their strong and weak points, what sold me was Dodge doesnt cover up the trrue manufacturer of the engine. Chevy now uses Isuzu, and Ford has been useing International-Navistar.

Sorry Drew - I've always felt that anything that had more'n six cylinders wasn't a REAL diesel...LOL. Some of that comes from back in the seventies when GM did make their diesel from a gasser foundation - guess I haven't kept up with the times. (but I still find myself thinking "that ain't no real diesel" when one of those FORD or GM trucks rolls up against me - and to prove that my CTD is a real diesel I beat that FORD diesel off the line the other night, and I'm stock!)
I was just posting a pic of the Bradley itself. . .

Ive been under the hood of these things, that engine is stuffed under there and all you realy see is transmission[:@]

Yea - too bad they don't offer that engine in over-the-road units. You know they're getting 600HP out of their ISX six cylinders now...we'll probably see 700HP in a year or two, although the fuel economy is harder to maintain with those more powerful engines and therefore the market for them gets smaller.
i'd say the body will rot off the truck before you have troubles with the motor enless you just don't care about it and don't take care of the motor......i bought a 92 dodge Cummins and i love it...its a 5spd. and i've thrashed on it...and i can boil the tires through 3rd and part way though 4th...and all i've done was turned up the pump a turn....it has 194 thousand miles on it...

From all the talk on the road, I hear two distinct and opposing opinions on what effect the emissions crap will have. One is just that, that it will cause some reduction in their ability to get maximum power, and the other is that they are so far advanced in diesel technology that they'll not let that stuff slow them down. But as far as I'm concerned, I don't see myself needing even 600hp - it'd be nice, but I'd just get the man on my **** all the more.
