Default Does anyone know...

Does anyone know how hot a 2005 48RE trans runs? I just added a deep trans pan and a trans guage, it is running at around a 150 degrees. Im curious how much the extra 3 quarts of fluid are helping.[8D]

Hey Sharx.....Every article I read seems to pound the issue of heat. At 175 degrees, tranny fluid will last 100,000 miles. Irregardless of the severity of the trannys use.

195 degress gives our fluid a life of 50,000 miles. All the articles seem to be in agreement with the figures. Keep in mind, once your tc goes into lockup, baring any slippage, your tranny fluid has nothing to do with vehicle motion anymore. The fluid is only keeping the clutch locked up. At the same time, the fluid is being circulated. From 175 up, every 20 degree increase cuts the fluid life in half. 215 degrees would have a life of 25,000 miles, etc.

150 is a very good number. I'm in upstate NY, and it gets cool at night. On the highway, my tranny temp is hovering around 120-125 degrees. I usually run about 150-160 in town with start and stop traffic. Obviously if you are running out of lockup, the fluid temp can rise considerably.

If you have to pull a hill for 10 miles and your tranny runs at 200 degrees for 15 mins, that's no problem. It's these guys whu run 230+ for extended periods. That can trash a tranny in a matter of hours.

Which pan did you add if I may ask?

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

I got th Mag Hytec, it is 3 quarts deeper, comes with the filter spacer and air ribs molded in and was set up for my Phantom trans gauage. They show the same specs you gave me on thier web site, I just wanted a second on it. You have set my mind to rest hehehe
My mechanic said he thought the stock set up ran at about 210, and with the new pan Iam at 150 is the highest so far, Im thinking I got my moneys worth. I cant believe how hard it was to find a pan set up for a temp guage in town, with the problems diesel are having with thier trannys once they install a chip. They are pricey tho!!!

I don't think that trans fluid temp thing is accurate. The newer alisons in med duty trucks will run 240-270 ops temp and have had no problems. Also is your temp gauge in the sump or the to cooler line? If it is in the sump, too late, you'll fry the trans before you realize what's happening. If you mount your temp sensor in the to cooler line, you now exactly how hot the fluid actually got.

240 -270? Must be some fancy kind of fluid? Every article I've read says the same about the types ATF that our trucks use.

That's a high temp.

I'll keep my current temps, thanks.................lol.
