Default play in ball joint

i knew it would happen eventually...feeling a little movement in the front end lately, so i put the truck up in the air and the upper balll joint on the passenger side has some slop in it. my question is - How much play is acceptable, if any? the drivers side is tight. Also, does everyone like MOOG for a replacement/upgrade???
thanks,

Any movement is considered bad, Mine hasn't worn out yet, so I couldn't tell ya on the aftermarket one.

correct!!! However, DC will not replace the ball joints untill movement exceeds .090"

I did the same a few weeks back, yanked the wheels off, grabbed a crow bar and borrowed a dial indicator from work, the most movement I had was on the passengers side, but it was still only .009"

I personaly thing the main downfall of these joints is they are sealed pieces. if they were greasable units the failures we are seeing would be cut in half, and yes, MOOG is a good alternative.

I was wondering if they made greaseable parts for these things. I'm used to greasing ujoints, ball joints, kin pins, spring pins, scams, and slack adjusters.

now, I'm digging pretty far back into the grave called my mind, however, IIRC NAPA makes a greasable ball joint.

Thanks guys,
I will likely look at replacing the uppers this fall, and i to, would rather have a greasable unit. Kind of interesting how all the sealed units(ball joints, u joints, etc)are the ones that everybody has trouble with.

They got a new seal front hub for OTR trucks. You can't take it apart. I haven't seen one yet, but it would be interesting to see the mileage they get out of them. They said they were good for 3,000,000 miles.

Lets see if they say 3 million then you may get 500,000 miles out of it in real life for an OTR truck. One other thing, you left out the part where the the warranty said it's good only if it's on smooth roads and it never sees any ruff parts of the US Hwy system!"[&:]

That new isx is suppose to last that long to before needing an inframe, but then again truckers can tear up everything.[&:]
