Last night on the PBS TV show 'Motorweek'
they had a short segment on
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
and the work they are doing on both
spark ignited and diesel engines.

They showed ORNL employees running a Saab 9-2
turbocharged flex fuel vehicle
on a wheel driven chassis dyno
running E85 to find the vehicle's
'Baseline' performance in both
horsepower, pollution and fuel economy.

They are doing this with your tax dollars.

They also interviewed a ORNL employee that
said that they had spent the last years helping
nearly all the diesel engine makers
meet the super-tough NOx pollution standards for 2007,
and continue helping with the even tougher standards coming for 2010.

If ORNL already has tested:
Cummins
Isuzu
Navistar
{as well as Cat, DetroitDiesel & Mack}

engines with our tax dollars
I sure wish they would publish the results
so that common citizens could find out what
engines actually can do, versus what the advertising says.

It is relatively easy to find peak hp and torque numbers
and nearly impossible to find out
how much fuel it takes to make a horsepower for an hour
or % fuel efficiency versus torque and rpm.

A few years ago the EPA published complete
graphs for what a 1.9 Liter Volkswagoon TDI does on diesel.

see figure 2 in this .pdf link

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/presentation...02-01-2743.pdf

that circle near the top of the graph is the
"Island of Best Fuel Economy"
where the TDI is converting 41% of the energy in the fuel
to useful power.

I sure wish we had similar graphs for 5.9 and 6.7 Cummins engines
and could compare them to Isuzu and Navistar engines.

I have spring feaver, and the a CTD in a new Ram has got me thinging abought tradding up from a awsome 06 2500 5.7 6sp, I know that the 5.9 is bullet proff and I have a few questions abought the new 6.7.

Is cummins using the same block, pistons, crank ect as the 5.9 just boared out more?
Is the turbo the same as the 5.9 and what if any are the major differances betwean the 6.7 and 5.9.

Nick nailed it. After taking my 07 6.7 to three dealerships due to a design flaw in the emissions systemI'm bewildered.the first two dealers just turned the light off and sent me on my way. The Third actually tried to help me. They said the turbo is full of carbon. Chrysler won't let them replace it. They want the dealer to try to break the carbon up and clean the turbo! The dealer wants to replace it but the big boys say no.Will Dodge/Chrysler issue a recall as they should? A steep downhill grade turns the light on. Constant use of the exaust brake turns the light on. If the system can't clean the carbon and it doesn't come out of the exhaust, what does the inside of my engine look like? Dodge won't discuss it with me on the phone, or return my emails. They are using customer stupitity and the dealerships as cover for a system that never should have been allowed to disgrace a once good Cummins engine!

Cummins didn't put the junk on the engien becasue they wanted to, it was the EPA and tree huggers who made all of you fun possable.
