Default Performance talk...

hey guys... I wrote this on another forum and thought it had some good info to share so here it is...

Info on the Swanker can be found here...
http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=906

Those that have the limited number of prototypes say they felt a gain when they did the install. no-one to my knowledge ever dyno'd one before and after. If I remember correctly, they are close to being in production.

I tried searching for more feedback in any thread and only found comments saying they liked it and felt a gain. so having no experience with it... I can only pass on what I read.

I think if someone is going to evaluate a mod without a dyno, they should put their truck in as basic a configuration as possible and try to come up with a standard of their own to compare by. mine has always been the steeper grades in the area... if your on the fence as to which one to buy... sit tight and wait until the swanker is on the market and see what the feedback from the long list of people waiting for one is. I like my ATS, it gives me a boost I can feel and will be keeping it.

one thing I can add is that when I 1st got my truck it was pretty impressive. I had the edge J/A on there and felt it was plenty strong, pulled really hard when in OD which I think has less torque management kicking in... if these trucks have it... I know the gassers do.... when I put on the 33's I knew I was going to loose alot of giddyup & go and did. so much so that cruising on the hiway now took more effort and passing it wanted to downshift more whereas with the stock tires it never did.

Seeking better performance I slapped on an AFE intake, I knew it would help the top end but hurt the bottome end making the low end situation worse which it did. Some mentioned the magnaflow exhaust was a good choice with it's straight thru design... knowing what I know from my gasser, a straight thru muffler was going to loose alot of low end torque and sure enough it did.

Now with the top end screaming bloody murder the bottome end is crying for help. I look at it as a balancing act between the top end & bottom end. Now that the top end is sweet, time to try & bring back the bottom end. 1st mod I did towards that was the ATS manifold. As I've been saying, I immediately noticed a difference in the bottom end and it was pretty clear when I was passing. the top end didnt seem to be affected either which was pretty cool. So now i'm one step closer to finding the balance I want.

2~3 months go by and motorheads start yapping more and more about the aero turbine muffler. also a straight thru design but with a slight restriction on the inlet side. (it splits the exhaust flow and by my estimation, the split reduces the straight thru portion to about 3.5", maybe as low as 3.0") So I decide to give it a shot and order up a 4040 w/o the resonator. my plan is to put it right after the turbo where the cat used to be. Once installed, my 1st impression was eh... it's ok. but I believe some mufflers like to go thru the heat cycling before they "settle down" from past experience, I figure I'll hold off on judging for a week or so until it's been in there a while.

sure enough as time past, it seemed to get stronger & stronger on the low end. Now I love it. I am pretty damn close to what I want, which is to have lots of torque, decent mileage when I want it and tons of power at the touch of a button (TST).

am I done... no... have 2 or 3 other ideas for performance that i'm looking into for overall performance. If I ever get them implemented I will gladly share the results. keep in mind that the evaluations will be with the TST on 1/1 or 1/2 for testing purposes.

nope, it has fittings for boost and injection only... there's like 5 ports on it.
