Modified A727 What is it?
On the 91 I just purchased, their is a tag under the hood that says this truck has a modified A727 transmission. What do they mean modified? Is this the transmission everyone says is no good?
Not real sure about the modified part, but the A727 is one of the beefiest auto trannies (in stock form) ever made. I don't remember the transmission that came in the first gens from the factory, but I know it wasn't based on the 727, the 2nd gens got a tranny based on the 727 because the V-10 was introduced and actually produced higher peak torque than the big C. Dodge couldn't find anything beefy enough to handle it other than the 727, so they revived it and smoothed it out a little, it was still just marginal in the diesels due to their broader torque curve and such. So, it sounds to me like a "modified A727" should be a good thing in your truck, depending on what said modification is. Likely a previous owner got tired of the tranny blowing and either a dealer or someone else put that tranny in. Just a guess.
