vp44 do i have it and did i kill it?
How do I know if I have the VP44 pump? I have a 2003 and I was under the impression that dodge upgraded to a more robust pump on this model? How do I know if this pump is not working correctly?
The reason I ask is:
According to my owners manual (2003) I have a heated fuel filter system. Well if this is true I need help to trouble shot to see if it is working. I have recently had very little power in cold weather which I believe was caused by my fuel “gelling”. If my fuel filter heater was working this should not have happened right? Also since I had to keep moving albeit at 10 MPH have I done any damage to my system? BTW I had the same problem the next day at the same temp after the truck was plugged in all night. The only difference was that the truck started easier.
Final question is where do I get a good service manual for the truck? What I mean by good is I am not a mechanic and it need to be written in lay person English.
Thanks for any help!

welcome to DF.... 2 things that may help... start using the "Drews Brew" which consists of 16 oz of Power Service Diesel (PSD) and 8 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO). Use the white bottle... it has anti gel additives in it. this mix has proven to get 1~3 mpg better than without it. Next if you go to the CTD FAQ you will find alot of info on your ram & it's CTD motor. in that thread you'll find a link to this thread AKA the "merry christmas" thread which will have a link to the service manuals that you can download... that should tell you just about everything you'll need to know about your truck.

You don't have the vp44 pump. You have the cp3. Its hard to tell if you lost your pump. I would start by changing the fuel filter and adding psd or some sort of anti gel to the tank. When you change the filter, it would be a good time to check out the fuel heater since you will have the bowl drained. An easy way is to measure it with a temp gun, see if it warms up. Plugging the truck in only heats up the coolant. How cold is it getting there?
Thanks Steve and Jake, i found the manual last night it was helpful. i tested the thermostat and it works so the heating elemet was at 4.6 ohm and the manual states 0.3 - somthing (cant remember) me not being very electrical i'm not sure what this means. but i did do a little test. ie i started the truck in 39 (which the heater should operate in) and ram idled it for a couple minutes and it did not seem to get warm, so i will assume the heating element is an issue. the temp is not all that cold 32 or so but i confess i have a little bit of bio in her.
so now i have more dino diesel and changed the fuel filter and all seems well. (i hope). i am looking at adding a heated fuel system and thoughts??

there was a company selling blanket warmers to stick on your fuel tank or oil pan, ect (dont remeber the name). I don't have a heater and I haven't had any problems down to about 20F. Of course thats with winter blend and drews brew (no bio)[:'(].
