I was wondering if anyone has removed there fuel plate from there trucks and ground on it instead of buying a new plate? i am thinking of doing this instead of spending the money but if it is now safe then i dont want to do it!
thank you in advance,
dylan

The biggest prob with grinding is if you dont like the results, you cant go back. Maybe you could pick up a spare on e-bay or some place. My 95 work truck had a "nub", which I removed. It seemed to add a little on take off, definately added smoke at low boost, but from the seat of the pants didnt do a wole lot. Depends on the grind, I guess. The flat one I made I think sells as a #0 plate.

Of course, mechanic who had the truck before me had slid the plate full foward, and twisted the hell out oif the torque screw in the governor. I could turn day into night, and got several calls on the 800 number from the back of the trruck "....I think there's somthing wrong with that truck!" I shure miss the ol' truck.

This is plate foward, slightly ground, and the broken lead seal sugguests the star wheel and gov screws were both tampered with. Stock turbo, inj's, and exhaust, I imagine the EGT as scorching hot, but never melted.
this shows about 3 feet into a second gear start. Smoke stays rich and black to about 1500rpm, and was fairly clean at 1900rpm, but kept a nice haze thruought the powerband.

If you or some one you know has access to an Injector stand, nozzles arent too expensive and are easily changed. Be carefull with the heat from all that fuel with no air....

That looks pretty cool... how hard is it to grind on the plate? im workin on gettin some 370 marine injectors in a few weeks and i was think that plus the ground fuel plate should have plenty of black smoke rollin out! What does the governor screw do as far as power and black smoke? thank you

RamBoy,, what year do u have. I have an 06 and with the programmer turned all the way up,, it barely puts out anything. I would love to get mine to pour black smoke,, I would almost cut off a toe to get that,

Well, getting the fuel plate out is no prob. As far as messing inside the gov, I think its not too bad, but getting to that point can be a PITA. "TECHNICAL DISCLAIMER: The pump should be removed and calibration changes be made on a pump stand."

However, some experienced hands know better, I apprenticed under some of those. On the back of the gov housing there is a small acces hole, sealed with a lead tab. Under that is 2 set screws, locked with nuts. One controlls the distance the rack travels, the other controlls the cam lever which hits the plate you want to grind. As I recall (been a while scince Ive been in a Ppump-- need to hit the books) on dad's 94, I gave the bottom screw <rack adj.> about 1/4 turn, changed nothing else and got about 20-30% and very little smoke. Much better fuel mileage. He could easily keep up with my stock 24v @ 235hp, so just guessing his 180?hp went to 210 or 215 at least. He had 4.10 gear to my 3.55, but I have the flat 24v tourque curve[8D]

usafr>> Not up on newer truck mods- that aero 4040xl is a bigger turbo??? Might be cleaning up any smoke you might have had from the programmer. We are, though, both in the electronic boat, and the 24v head and over center injectors seem to be a bit more efficient with the air flow. Fueling boxes alone dont seem to get much for smoke. Getting bigger injectors would certainly help, but some boxes (or programmers) dont add full fuel untill a certain amount of boost pressure in order to prevent smoke and high exh temps. My TST box is like that.
I know you can get smoke, Ive seen HPCR engines smoke like a 12v.

i have a 1995 but my truck only black smokes when there is barely any boost (star wheel)... just wondering do u have to remove the intake (the part that goes into the head) to get to the break off screw i have all the tools needed to do the job but i dont want to make it more difficult than it already is. also has anyone ever used to 370 marine injectors? do they smoke alot? any complaints? thank you

Hope you got gauges......

370's might get pretty hot with a stock turbo. I bet they'll smoke like hell though[8D]

Remove the intake, it will make life easier. You can see all the bolts, very easy to remove, its just worth the time. the grid heater should seal up just fine when you put it back.

yes im getting gauges... those are already ordered i firgured things might heat up a little bit with all that fuel but i got the full k&n intake and a full 4" exhaust hopefully that will keep things pretty cool... do u mean that the gasket on the intake will still be good (considering my truck has 332,000 miles on it... easy miles but still enough to put some wear on a gasket) because if my truck is down i wont have a way to drive around... im hopeing to be able to tear down and get all the work do and put back together in 1 day if at all possible! thank you obert ur a very helpful person!
