Cumminalong, your winch mount looks awesome! If you haven't patend it yet Iam going to try to build it. I like how it puts the winch up higher than a lower frame mount.

My front hitch came today and I didn't even open it, its going straight back. Too bad I didn't see your post before I ordered it.

I had one question I came up with while scoping out my front end:

You are using 3/8" steel plate but the current tow hook brackets you are going to bolt toare only 1/8" (or less).
Either I have different brackets on my '05 2500 or strength isn't an issue in that structural plane?

That plate you are seeing is just a cover. There are bolts behind that that are actually one the other side of the frame that it's bolte too.

There is a little more beef there than jsut that little 1/8" plate.

Go for it brother! I'd be more than happy to use you as the test guinea for this!

Let me know if you run into a snag with it. I'd like to see it.

I took last week off from work to get some stuff done around the house and could have easily gotten this thing built, but the wife decided that she wanted a new hutch built for the living room. Here's what has been consuming my week:

Sooooooooooooooooooo.......as I stated before:

Damn it! Has anybody seen my sack lying around anywhere?

I'm buying steel tomorrow. I am also going to do a wood mock-up of at least the tubing.

The hardest work is already done: The Idea.

I plan on taking pictures as we go and I'll post 'em when it's done.

Thanks again for the great idea.

Doing the mock up with the wood will make it much easier to do the real one. Some 3/8" ply and a 2x2 (better get a 4x4 and cut it down to the actual receiver tube size 2 5/8 OD)

Yeah, I'll be interested to see it.

For the real one, are you gonna bend it or weld in the angles?

I know a guy that just purchased a warn winch with a air compressor built into it. he has the multi mount on it as well. I just cant justify putting a winch on a 50,000 dollar truck...

Brother, a $50K truck is a perfect reason to have a winch. But, that's why I have a multi-mount setup, so I can take it off when I don't need it there.

I use mine all the time....

1 - not for wheeling, for pulling crap outta the woods that I would otherwise have to take my truck into; saving wear and tear on the truck

2 - pulling other guys out of their off-road adventures (see one of my previous posts)

Very useful tool.

I just think that I shouldnt have my truck in a predicament to need a winch

It's keeping it out of that predicament is what I use it for.

Example:

I like to cut my own wood. Both for burning and building things. I can go on post and cut all the wood I want. Now, you have a choice, drive your truck into where the good stuff is or cut it up into 8 - 12 foot sections, hook the winch to it and drag it over to where the truck is parked up at the firebreak and cut it into manageable chunks right there.

Saves a bunch of wear and tear on the back too.

Also, I'm always more than willing to help a friend, but I won't take my truck into a real nasty spot to pull some other 'tard out that couldn't see the signs (i.e. greenish-gray death mud). I'll never leave ya stranded and I'll help ya as much as I can, but I'm not destroying my truck to do it. Winch helps out in doing that.

Just my opinion, not everyone needs one, but it's damn handy.
