Donny, I ended up installing it horozontal to keep it up above the bottom of the frame. Talked with my amsoil rep and he felt it should be ok in that position. the instructions also mention that horozontal was ok, but vertical was prefered. As for rocks hitting it... a shield wouldnt be a bad idea. if you have mud flaps on, then you should be ok.

The color of the oil should not be the only benifit if it does clear up back to it's original pour in color... you have to remember that it's filtering down to the 2 micron level which will keep the oil pretty clean...

 

If your REALLY worried about rocks, why not just slip a coffee can over it?

 

whats the main purpose behind this oil bypass? a brief overview of how it works/what it does?

 

I dont think the filter will be a problem the way it's mounted...

the kit is designed to filter down to the 2 micron level, the cleaner the oil, the better... and the longer you can use it.

So I assume you had no room on the firewall area to install being you went under and on the frame rail? I had someone tell me the other day that is where they did theirs this is why i asked. Now I'll have to give this more thought as to where I can put one when I do get it. Oh and thanks for spending my money that I don't have saved yet

 

hey no problem... now if someone here would do the TAG and let us know if it's worth it before I spend the $ on one, it would be nice...

 

Update... took a sample out of the return line to have a look at it... still looks black as the day I swapped in the oil (oil turned black before I was done putting the oil fill cap on)... have a look.

there is about 2500 miles on it now, maybe 2800... i'd have to check the odometer. also here is a pic of the final install location after the 2500 miles...

Steve, did yo ever take a look at the flow rate comming from the bypass filter?

Meaning .... did you leave your cap unscrewed while the truck was running just to see the flow rate? How fast / slow was it?

 

yup, thats how I got the sample... the flow rate is pretty good, only took a couple of seconds to get that much. Talking with another bypass kit user he has the same results, black oil... it's the condition of the oil that's different. I may have mis-read the one post on the oil being golden instead of black. I have been told that the soot is even finer than what the filter can screen out, thus keeping the oil black.

 

Well at least you know that it's working. How do you know when to change the filter, when nothingis reallycomming out?
