follow the instructions for the filter... but in general, spray it with acleaner provided by the manufacturer then flush from the inside out... pushing the dirt out of the filter instead of driving it in. once it's clean, let it dry then re-oil it... again follow the instructions.

Would it be better to dry the filter using a compressor or let it dry without any assistance?

no forced air and no high pressure water, tap water or a hose is whats recommended. you'll need to let the filter air dry for about 30 minutes before re-oiling it. you can speed up the drying process by leaving it in the house or in a warm room.
