Exhaust/Intake/Programmer Question
Ok, so as some of you may know I recently purchased an 06 3500 4x4 Mega CTD. Im trying to find a cheaper route versus buying a complete Turbo Back Exhaust, which might I add will do if it is logical (just trying to save some money). Here is my idea, after inspecting the underbody of my pick up I see like there is a huge Catlylitic Converter, would it be feeseable to just have that piece cut out and replaced with just a regular pipe. I certainly hope yall understand what Im saying.
I'm alsowanting to get the AFE Stage 2 Intake but cant find myself spending $400 is there anyone that knows of something else or someone selling their intake along withBully Dog programmer.
Thanks,
Rudy

A cheap route you could take on the exhaust would be to remove the cat and stock muffler...then throw on the Aero Turbine 4040 or 4040xl muffler. Loads of members on this forum have done this including myself and have had nothing but GREAT luck with the Aero. I had my cat removed and the aero was put in its place. Then we removed the stock muffler and just welded enough 4 inch pipe to fill the gap. Cheap alternative to an expensive exhaust system and IT WORKS!
On the intake side of things....there's several cheaper systems out there that probably work just as good. I have the S&B Intake system and love it...it was under $200. Came with filter, airbox, and intake tube....great system and way cheaper than other systems!
As far as a package deal like you're talking about....just have to search around the 'net and could probably find someone who'd sell a package deal for you. I'm picking up my bully dog power pup today from a local truck shop here in town and their price was almost as good as any price on the 'net. I just prefer to do business with a local shop, they'll usually take good care of ya!

yank the cat, put an aero 4040 in it's place, then swap the muffler for a magnaflow straight thru one... then get a good CAI kit, you should be happy with the performance. think about your future mods and buy accordingly. if your looking for used intakes, keep an eye in the classifieds they do turn up from time to time. I posted a link to a vendor who was having a sale on intake kits about 4 or 5 days back, it might be worth a look. IIRC, the AFE Stage 2 with PG7 filter was right at $400 bux, pretty good deal, the non-pg7 setup should be about 50~75 bux cheeper...

no, you can do a straight pipe... if you do, get the 4040XL aero, its a little quieter. the straight 4040 is said to be too loud.

Doing theexhaust like I said is just a cheap alternative to buying a full aftermarket exhaust. In my opinion, why spend big $$$ on a system when you already have 4inch exhaust from the factory! Eliminate some restrictive components like the cat and stock muffler....throw on the Aero and some 4 inch straight-thru pipe and you're set!
The aero is a muffler but the company suggests putting it where the cat was so when the exhaust gases come out the turbo down pipe....they flow right into the aero which causes the gases to start swirling around like a tornado. In turn, this pushes the exhaust gases out faster/smoother....the faster you can pull in air and push out exhaust....the more efficient your CTD is going to be (power, mileage, etc).
The Aero 4040 is considerably louder than stock. At cruising speeds/rpms, the cab noise is about the same w/out much drone. At 75-80 mph, you start to hear the drone a bit more. If you stick your foot in it any at all though, it will rumble
The 4040XL isthe reasonated version and should be a lot quieter.
