maybe a bath is in order ;-) ...sorry... I couldn't resist, I'm only kidding.
If you have a standard maybe it's possible the rubber grommet is gone or broken where the shifter
connect to the tranny? That may let smells come into the cab.
Or maybe, you have a hole in the firewall that's letting fumes enter ?
It's hard to say what it could be.

No not recently, only bought the truck not long ago have been using 4x quite a bit as the roads are ice up here in alberta, other than that nothing done to truck, pretty sure its gear oil, first thought maybe kids left some food to go bad but cleaned her out, can really smell it when the heat is on? and can smell it a bit outside as well.
If you're smelling it when the heat is on, I'd be more inclined to say that some oil probably got spilled in the engine compartment and you are getting that.
See if you get the smell when it's on MAX A/C. This recirculates the air inside the cab and doesnt pull from outside. If the smell goes away, you know it's outside, most likely enigne compartment.
Obviously, being up in Alberta you might wanna set the temp to heat though. Just a suggestion.

Well, I was going to suggest that you check the rear axle seal on the wheels - my '04 had a leak that once fixed still leaked just enough to smell it (that's gear oil out there at the bearing) after rolling down the road. (you didn't buy your truck in CA did you?) But now the post about the vacuum pump makes me wonder if your smell is related to it instead...but get close to the bearings just to see if that's where the smell is from. My dealer told me they had seen quite a few of that year with leaks there...
