The way I've been explaining it. GM can't afford to buy a Caliber from Chrysler right now, let alone the whole company. This rumor is just getting blown up from a comment from Zetsche, his comment is intended to help in the upcoming union negotiations with UAW. Chrysler hasn't gotten the same concessions from UAW as GM and Ford because DC in Germany has money. So Zetsche was just making a statement to say give us the same deal or we may just sell you.

I mostly got it from this article, which I happened to see before this hit CNN and such.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount GM buying Chrysler. It could be done as a merger (stock swap) with Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep falling under the GM umbrella. This would prevent Toyota from overtaking GM as the #1 automaker for several years at least. Given Toyota's recent quality issues, perhaps forever. But back to my point. Bob Lutz worked his way to the top at Chrysler from 1986-1998 when Daimler took over. Bob Lutz now at GM probably would like nothing better than control over Chrysler again. Wouldn't it be great for our Dodge trucks to be American again?
