Default What next...?

Well you can see by my sig what kind of current mods i have on my truck. One of the next mods i am planning to buy will be a fuel pressure gauge which brings me to my original question...what mod would be the next thing I should do to get the most out of my truck? I would imagine the truck is starving for fuel at some point or if not starving, it could certainly use more. I was thinking the lift pump either the FASS or the Glacier fuel kits. I want a new turbo as well but I am thinking fuel upgrades should come first before I add more air into the engine. Should I upgrade the CP3? If so which first, the lift pump or the CP3?

Then of course there is the tranny. I have been considering getting the transgo shift kit but thats a bit confusing. Whats the differance between the shift kit and the reprogrammer? Or should I upgrade the valve body? Local tranny shops are estimating about $500 to install the shift kits, does this seem high or about right?

I know eventually i will need to upgrade the whole tranny and not just bandaid it but in the short term the above are what I am working towards first. I am just not sure about what should come first and or how to go about it. So, any recommendations would be appreciated.

As far as the fuel system mods, I'd put in the pressure gauges and see if you are actually over taxing it first. You may not even need to. Is the engine cutting out, like it's starving for fuel? If not, then you're most likely okay.

As for the tranny mods....if you can change the tranny fluid, you can install a shift kit. All you're doing is replacing the thin cover that goes over the valve body. Now, if you are replacing the valve body, then it usually comes with a few other parts, but just a shift kit is no big deal.

Getting it reprogrammed is just what it sounds like......using a programmer to adjust line pressure in the tranny. This does the same thing as a shift kit, only electronically.

Instead of the whole tranny, with the mods you have I'd go with a new TC and the valve body. A new input shaft if you're really hard on it, but otherwise at least upgrade the TC and get a new valve body of shift kit and you'll be amazed.

if you dont mind me butting in.....what exactly does the valve body do? and what is the secret behind more line pressure? where can a shift kit be purchased? and for about how much?

thanks guys

The valve body controls where the tranny fluid goes and how much is supplied (i.e. hydraulics).

Line pressure is how much hydraulic force is actually pushed through the valve body to control the clamping force of the bands. This is controlled electronically and determines how hard or soft your tranny shifts, how much the slippage you get and how much heat the tranny builds when shifting.

Some of the programmers give you better shifts by increasing the line pressure only. This is good, but only addresses the pressure and not the actual amount of fluid available. Valve bodies control the amount of fluid.

Think of it like this. Apply 10 psi to a gallon of water and force it through a straw. How long would it take to push it all through. Now, apply that same 10 psi of force to a gallon of water and force it through a hose. Which is gonna supply more.

For the best effect, you want increased pressure and volume.

Thanks for the reply! My plan is to first get a gauge. I've beeing trying to find the right A-pillar that suits my interests. Most are 2-3 gauge openings but not sure what I would fill all those openings with. The Banks pretty much tells me everything i need except the fuel pressure and oil temp.

Anyway, I wanted the transgo shift kit but every trans shop I have talked to has quoted near $500 to install, then my comment is usually something like " Wow...guess I will do it myself" Usually I am told there are TONS of stuff that need to be done and thats why it costs so much. So my question is, if the shift kit is so easy, then why so much for the service! Also, the Transgo kits all state they raise line pressure but i see them as either shift kits or reporgrammers and it sounds like it's always the same kit...hence my confussion with all of this. I want a better shift, I want to do it on the cheap..for the time being anyway. I understood your descriptions but how many Transgo kits are there for the 48RE and which one do I need?
