Default 46RE Vs. 48RE transmission.

My truck has a 46re automatic transmission. Does anybody know the difference between that and the 48re? Are there any different power ratings, am I more prone to cook mine than one with 48re?
I tend to think that bigger numbers mean stronger stuff, would that be the case?
