2001 B2500 Front Brake Job -help
Hey guys & gals,
My son and I started into this job in the mid afternoon. Before we took on the job we did our homework. (that's always a good thing right?)
We do know that the B2500 comes in two different offerings. The first having the standard suspension and axle rating of 3,500lbs. The second having the HD suspension and the axle rating of 4,000lbs. Out B2500 has the 4,000lbs rated axle. Thus, the 8-lugs vs. the 5-lugs as shown from the AutoZone website.

So, this isn't supose to be a hard job with the parts right?!? [&:]
The 8-lug disc in the new box looks just like the one we're taking off, so we thought.
Well, after getting the wheel, caliper, bearings and disc off, we found this to our amazment ...
Here's the back side of the original ...

Here's the back side of the new replacement part ...

Now tell us, why is the front inner-seal hub for the bearing totally different ?!?!?
And what's up with that fancy sprocket ring on it too?!?[>:] Everything else with these disk are identical except the inside(backside) of hub.
Stev

They gave you a 4-wheel ABS rotor instead of a rear axle only ABS rotor. That 'gear' is what spins past the front wheel ABS sensor to help determine if the wheel is rotating or not.
You misunderstood me, these vans have either rear axle only ABS or 4-wheel ABS. If a van has only the rear axle ABS then the front rotors DO NOT have that gear because there are no wheel sensors up front. If a van has 4-wheel ABS then the front rotors DO have that gear because there are front wheel sensors.
alloro,
Yes, that's the answer!
The aftermarket only sells one type of front disc for either ABS or non-ABS now. So, after finding this out today by flopping betwix AutoZone and NAPA, I got some front internal disc-seals for the bearings and some internal bearings for the discs.
An hour ago of this post, we had finished the job.
It's totally amazing how the van rides. The front end now is soooooo smooth. Guess what the problem was, the front internal wheel bearings were shot. AND what I thought was tire noise with the front end was actually the front internal bearings! The Yokohama tires are super quiet !!!!
I had mistaken the "shot" front disc internal wheel bearings for tire noise.
What a fun evening! [&:]
