Default Gas Problem - stops for no reason

I could use some help here if anybody has a clue. I am driving cross country to show my wife a bit of America. A couple years ago my gas gauge quit working, so I have been using the trip meter to determine when I need gas. Just to be safe I usually fill around 200 miles, but it's usual fine up to around 250. Well, as I was coming across Iowa it acted like it was running out of fuel and I barely made it to a rest area at only 210 on the trip meter. Called a tow truck to bring fuel and drove away, fine I thought,... must have forgot to change it or did too much intown driving. About a week later I'm crossing Texas on my way back and it runs out at only 145 miles in the middle of no where. Hike to a gas station and put fuel in and it starts again fine, but when I get to the station it only takes about 12 gallons and I only put two in. OK long story I know, but IT ACTED LIKE IT WAS OUT OF GAS, BUT IT WASN'T REALLY - AN HOUR LATER STARTS OK. No problem in the last two days, but I'm a bit worried, because I'm 1500 miles from home and don't know when or where it might do this again? ANY IDEAS OUT THERE ???? SOMEONE TOLD ME COULD BE THE FLOAT GETTING STUCK WHEN THE TANK STARTS TO GET LOW. PLEASE HELP. I'M LISTENING.

It's time to replace the fuel pump. What's happening is as the tank level drops the pump is no longer fully submerged. Since the fuel helps tokeep the pump cool, the lack of it around the pumpwill cause a worn pump to overheat and shut down.
