Default DODGE CAMPERVAN

I have a 1979 dodge campervan with the royale rv conversion. I live in Scotland. The engine on the van threw a conrod six years ago after 70000 miles. I want to restore the van but am considering a more economic engine since petrol here is about ten dollars a gallon. I hear dodge fitted a mitsubishi d50 diesel to some of their vans in the 80 s. any ideas Charlie

Charlie,

Here in the states we only had the 6-cly 225cid engine and no diesel offering. However, poking around the internet, I've read in short blurbs about the D50 (4D55T) engine being in the vans from 1980 to 1986 elsewhere (Canada, Austraila, Asia, ...) . If you go for the swap, read up on this diesel first. AND make sure to get the turbo version due to the power needed to move that van. The non-turbo drops the "T" at the end.

The D50 is actually a Mitsubishi Mighty-Max engine used in the Dodge trucks until 1986 when the Dakota came about. 1983-1986 2.3L 4D55T turbo diesel I4 84hp (63W).

It is mentioned that possibly Ford used this diesel engine in the small Ranger truck in the mid-80s too.
Diesel variants The Ford Courier was never available with a diesel engine in the US. However, the 1980 Mazda B2200 was available with a Perkins 4.135 (4 cylinder, 135 cu in) manufactured 2.2 liter diesel engine, producing 66horsepower (49kW) at 2,100 rpm. This same diesel engine was available in the 1983 and 1984 Ford Ranger, however it was replaced by the Mitsubish 4D55T 2.3 liter turbo diesel for the 1985 to 1988 Ford Rangers.
Some info on the Mitsubishi engines.

The problem is, the 4D55T is a rare bird of an engine making it hard to find parts these days. Look at the Mitsubishi engine list, scout the internet for parts in your area and see what will fit under the Ram Van hood. The 2.5L diesel isn't too bad for size and power either. This engine is very much sought after too! A re-manufactured 1986 one here in the states lists for $1,637USD without shipping nor taxes. It's not a rebuilt, but far better. http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/...ml?p_vid=28317

Some of the Mitsubishi cars used the 4D55T engine as well. (Starions and Conquests). Mazda used it in their B2600 truck.
