'99 B1500 V6 - sudden loss of power
Thanks guys. Yes, Autozone does have a lifetime warranty on the cat & muffler and they ship free over $50!
I did check the tail pipe - feels & sounds solid.
There are two O2 sensors which look easy to remove and replace - no rust on threads. I will wait on replacing them at $70+ each.

i also had this problem with my 99 ram van 1500 V6. Last week.
my primary problem was actually the ignition coil. it took my local shop a few hours to diagnose and replace it, and i left there aware that i also had partial blockage somewhere in my exhaust. i had been hearing that when idle, reverse, or 1st/2nd gear for awhile. but i needed to take it to another shop that dealt with exhaust systems.
before i made it to this other shop, the check engine light came on. they ran diagnostics and identified the problem as the catalytic converter. i had it replaced with the OEM ($900ish-ouch) cat and also had the clamp and O2 sensor replaced.
the van is running better, but still growl-rattles. i'm looking into that now. it seems like it's coming from somewhere just before the cat, so i'm wondering about the related clamps and the heat shield.
hope this helps a bit. at least we're not alone.

The cat & muffler ordered thru AutoZone arrived yesterday - hope to have time today to install. I dropped the old exhaust last week.
The only clamps in the system are the two at the muffler and the two at the exhaust manifolds - which are part the new cat. The hangers which are rubber mounted would have been checked by your exhaust shop.
I would guess a heat shield might be rattling - there are quiet a few of them. Mobile or alloro would have a better idea of what may be causing your growl.
Good luck.
Doug

Do check the heat shields, exspecially the one above the cat. Another thing I have seen cause a rattle/growl was on a car where the spark plug wire was sparking (shorting out) at the exhaust manifold.
On the heat shields, grab it and gently but firmly push, pull, move side ways. What you are looking for is any looseness where the heatshield mounts to. If you have good mechanic gloves you can while the van is running BUT BE CAREFULL NOT TO GET BURNED, do the above mentioned ways to check and see if you can find which one is the problem.
On the spark plug wires look for any that come in contact with the exhaust (which they should not) and look for electrical arking black spots.
