Default Problems with 1996 Dodge B2500 V-8 Van

Hey Guys,

Here is my problem. This started happening when we have gas shortages here in the southeast.

My van will cut off when lifting off the gas near stop signs and stop lights. But it does not do it all the time. I have to push the gas pedal in to get it started.

It happened last Weds. it did it all day. It did not not do it again until today. I was leaving work it was fine I got almost home and do it three times. Closer to home took my foot off the gas pedal and did not do it again. It takes me 20 to 25 mins to get home.

I have cleaned the IAC last week. I have also put rubbing alchol in the gas tank to take the water out. My garge told me to do that.

Thanks for any help.

Michael

How much gas is in the fuel tank when this happens? Running the van below about 1/8 tank of fuel left can cause this described problem. If this is it then when you are stopping the fuel is leaving the pickup area and the fuel pump goes dry which drops the pressure and then shuts off the engine. Then when restarting you have to prime the system and bleed out the air from the fuel line.

Does not matter how much gas is in the tank. It still does it. I have had anywhere between 1/4 to a full tank of gas. I hope this helps.

How long since your last tune-up?

Did a tune up this June. I changed all plugs, wires, rotor button, and dist. cap.

It is possible that the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) has a problem. If there is a "dead" spot in it then the PCM would loose reference and not know how much fuel to give the engine.

Would that be easy to change?

Yes, you will have to look under the air cleaner to find it. It should be on the drivers side of the Throttle Body (TB). It will be on the other side of TB from where the accelerator pedal cable attaches to the TB. Should be some screws to remove and disconnect the connector. If you buy one from the auto part store then it will help show you what and where to look on your TB.

Changed the TPS and it did not help. Maybe the MAP?

It's possible that with the shortages, the tanks in the ground were run down pretty far and you got a load of gunk pumped into your tank. Now you're stuck with a restricted fuel line, clogged filter, or a gunked up pickup tube in the tank.
