1989 B 250 Van / 318/ no power to coil
Hey everybody, If anyone might have some info. I just bought an 89 van. Drove it home . started every time I tried. Battery went dead, so I charged it. It wouldn't start. The cap had some corrosion so I changed cap, rotor , wires , plugs, and coil. still wont start. I checked for spark. No spark from the coil. I cant find the ballast resistor. I had it running fine.Im trying to find th wiring diagram so I can see where the wires to the coil are coming from, any input will be greatly appreciated, thanks , banzanto
More info needed.
Does it crank and just not start?
Does it just make a clicking when the key is turned?
Can you hear the fuel pump turn on for a few seconds when You first turn the Key?
I am assuming that it cranks but does not start.
There are 2 relays The ASD (auto shut down) and the Starter relay They are the same type of relay, mounted on the firewall, one to the left and below the power brake booster the other to the right.
Remove the ASD relay first and bridge the contacts on the two fattest wires.
You should hear the fuel pump engage . See if Van starts.
Try the same with the starter relay, if the asd one proves not to be at fault.

Hi Thanks for the info, It does crank and i think the pump is activating because when I shut the key off, you hear something reset. I pulled the fuel line off and theres fuel. but no spark at the coil. the original owner said it wouldnt start and that there was a wire going to the fuel pump that he fixed. Is this part of what your speaking about and what does it have to do with the coil if any thanks again, banzanto
That noise you hear after turning the key on or off is an idle speed motor. It's normal, but not related directly to the fuel pump. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank and you can hear it easiest if you stick your ear to the fuel inlet.
I think the ASD relay controls more than just the fuel pump on our year. I got an '89 as well.
It's designed to help prevent fuel and spark in the event of an accident, I believe.
I'd be wary of any recent repair by a previous owner and check their work.
Listen at the tank when turning the key on for the fuel pump. It should pump for a couple seconds after the key is turned. If it is not turning on then bridge the two fat wires on the ASD relay and then listen for the noise of the pump activating.
Start with this and it should narrow things down.
