Default transmission compatability question

i have a 1990 dodge ram 350 with the 5.9/360. the transmission is starting to go out. are tranmissions from vans with 5.2's compatable with the larger engine? what other year/years could i look for to get a transmission off of?

sorry for the newbie questions. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

The transmissions are compatible but the torque converters are not. The 360 is an externally balanced engine, and being such, there is a counterweight on the torque converter for a 360. The 318 is an internally balanced engine and does not have this counterweight.

so if i'm looking for a transmission in a junkyard, i need to pull one from a van with a 360?

is it safe to assume that dodge trucks with a 5.9 would have the same transmission?

also, are other years transmissions compatible?

sorry for all the questions. i'm in a band and our trusty tour van is in need of a transmission. we're pretty attached to this van and we don't want to get rid of it

The tranny can be out of just about anything. The torque converter, whether new or used, has to be for a 360 because of the counterweight. Worse case scenario is that you will have to swap your original bell housing over to the new (used) tranny.
