Default 1998 Ram Van 1500 wont start unless boosted

I have a 1998 dodge ram van b1500. Randomly, one day the truck decides not to start. Instead of starting, it makes a clicking noise when i turn the ignition. I decided to change the battery, since the guy i had recently bought it off of said he had never done it, and the car still wont start. But it starts when boosted.
Im thinking ether the wire connectors, or something in the starter, but i dont really know. Any help would be appreciated!!

Me too. Clamping the jumper cables on is probably just enough additional pressure to improve the connection from the battery post to the cable.

So what fix is necessary? is it the connectors in to the battery terminals? or do you think that it would be the starter solenoid?

When you jump it, are you putting the black on the engine, or on the battery?

If on the engine this might indicate a bad ground to the engine from the battery.

Always start these types of problems by eliminating the battery connections/cables and engine and firewall grounds as the culprits.

Since you put both jumpers on the battery terminals, I believe Alloro's response was the most likely. The extra clamping pressure of the jumpers is enough to cause a better connection between the cables and battery. This should be remedied my a good cleaning until the battery terminal lead is as shiny as aluminum foil.

Also check your battery cables for green or white corrosion. Also check the connections at the starter, and the main engine ground.

The jumper pack itself will not have enough juice to by itself to crank your engine.

There is also the possibility that one of the relays has some corroded terminals. Starter or ASD.

Congrats! It's a good feeling to be able to fix something without having to pay someone else to do it. Especially when it is something so simple.
