first thing thank you for any help you can give on this. the van in question is a 1997 full size van with over drive (switch on dash) the reverse stoped working . all other drives forward work fine. a friend said that the rear overdrive unit is the cause! just with the cost of the drive i would like to here from others that had the same problem......thanks again rick..

In my experience, which is limited, when reverse goes...the forward gears are not far behind. You are probably looking at a rebuild.

agreed

I would get the rebuild done before the forward gears go though because you might not need new planetary gears... yet.

Hi Rick
Welcome to DF
The overdrive unit does not house the reverse piston. The main transmission case does. You need to remove the transmission pan and inspect. You can have the reverse strut that fell off the reverse band or the piston broke and can not apply the reverse band.
