I was driving along about 35mph, the van kinda did a hic-up then rolled to a stop and wouldn't restart.
I don't have any spark from distributor wires to the plugs. There is a bank of fuses in the glovebox, 1/2 are getting power the other 1/2 not getting power when I checked them with a test light.None of these fuses are burned out.
I checked and replaced the four fuses under the dash by the steering column.
I don't have dash lights, or turn signals. Do have headlights, horn , emergency flashers, and a good hot battery
I replaced steering column disconnect switch, and pick-up coil in distributor, checked wire connections. Please help, Carl

You likely have a burnt fusible link that is tucked behind the brake booster.

Did you check with the ignition switch on? If the key was off then the fuses would not have power going to them. If you tested with the key on and still no power then as Landyacht318 said look behind the brake booster for a burned out fuse link.

 

You ROCK, it was a burned wire right where you said it would be. The van has been down for 2 weeks, and we were stumped. Thank you so much.

 

Found another burned one today. Fixed the first one and the van started right up, ran for 10 minutes and burned into again.I have a bad ignition switch, so I had wired around it several years ago, do you think that could be the problem? I'm 71 years old but still work several hours a day to supplement my SS, and the van is the perfect work vehicle for me,would sure hate to lose it. Once again Thanks to you fellows who gave me a place to start. I really appreciate it

 

Was the fusible link that blew most recently the same fusible link you just replaced?

The guy suspects his ignition switch, but does not seem like the sharpest chisel in the drawer. But he does have a factory service manual and has determined that the ignition switch is fed by the fusible link which blew, and keeps blowing the 25 amp regular fuses he replaced it with.

Yes it burned the same orange link . Since then have found a burnt white link, will replace today and check ignition wiring. I don't know much about this but will keep plugging along. Thank you.

 

Are you sure it is not a grey link?

Okay, I just checked the wiring diagram for my '89 in my haynes manual.

So far I have found 2 fusible links that say they are white and 22 awg.

One goes to the hazard flashers
One goes to the Auto shut down relay.

An orange one goes to the ignition switch, say it is 12 awg

It's definitly a white link. All the tips you have sent have been right on,and we are going to check each and every one of them, although we seem to have trouble spotting some of these components. We have a Haynes repair manuel but it doesn't always give a clear picture of where things are located, for instance it says starter relay and ASD are almost identical size and shape on either side of the brake booster, but we can't seem to spot them. Part of that may be our eyesight, or the fact we are no where near being mechanics. We appreciate your help. Thanks again
