Default Coolant Leak and Running Rough.

I have a 96 ram 1500 5.9 with 128,000 miles.

I have lean fuel and multiple misfire codes. I plan on changing the fuel pump because on two occasions van lost power came to a stop, then was fine when I filled the tank, except for the codes.

Van started running rough a few weeks ago. I have a whining almost clicking noise (it sounds like a tape player playing without a tape) that comes from the passenger side of the engine. I don't think its engine knock. Gets louder during acceleration especially if climbing hill.

I also have a coolant leak, not gushing just a fair amount of drops when i park. One from where the transmission meets the engine and another under the engine from what looks like where a cylinder is next to the oil filter (a white circle). Not leaking from the oil filter. See photo.

Van is not overheating, exhaust is clear, oil looks fine, coolant looks fine.

I was wondering if i might have a blown head gasket or signs of any major engine problems due to the coolant leak from engine or if these symptoms are common of a bad fuel pump and should just go ahead and change out the fuel pump.

thanks.
ross.

You are leaking coolant from one of the freeze plugs. They are inexpensive( get brass not steel), but getting new ones in straight is not always the easiest. They can blow out of the block instantly and you will overheat very quickly.

Get a new distributor cap with brass contacts( versus aluminum), new spark plug wires and new spark plugs. Make sure the new SP wires do not touch each other or anything metal. The ticking is likely the sound of the spark leaving the plug wire instead of going to the plug.

Condemn the fuel pump only after replacing the spark related components

From the photo, it looks like a bad freeze plug that needs replacing to correct that leak.

Putting a new one in isn't bad if you cleaned the hole and lead-in. Use a large socket against the new plug and a small piece of wood over the socket to beat in with a hammer. This should help to get the plug in straight.
