surges @ stop then dies
I have a 2000 van with the 3.9 litre engine. Recently when stopping at a light or stop sign, the vehicle surges then dies. No codes on the reader, no lights (ck engine ...) are on. Any suggestions on what to check? I bought this van new in 2000 so I know the maintenance history on it. Oh yeah, it has 82000 miles on it.

Yes, the IAC is the very first thing to tackle with the symptoms mentioned.
Other items to note ...
- Replace the cap-n-rotor with a copper/brass type.
- Replace the spark plugs with Autolite AP5224 platinum plugs.
- The ignition wires, if original need to be replaced. Make sure to use the same size wires. This is 7-8mm in size. 8mm would be best.
- Have the coil checked out too. With the mileage, it nearly due for a new replacement.
- It's winter, so run 5W30 oil.
- Clean out the PVC and the crank-case breather bell.
Those things mentioned above can be culprits too for your problem. However, the IAC is usually the easiest to clean and tends to be the first thing to stumble the idle.
The mileage is pressing closer to 90K. It may be a good time to plan on saving for a new catalytic converter and new O2 sensors now. Avoid the Bosch sensors since they are known not to work properly with our vans.

Mine Too
I had the same issue with my van. Here is the link.

The fix ended up being quite simple. I went to an auto parts store and bought a can of throttle body cleaner. With the engine off, I removed the air cleaner, grabed an old toothbrush and thoroughly cleaned the entire throttle body. I cleaned the butterflies and the inside and outside of the throttle body.
I dried everything the best I could, reassembeled the air cleaner and started it up. The van initally was hard starting and wouldn't idle. After a short period it cleared up and now runs fine.
The cost of the can of throttle body cleaner was $5. Be aware that your van will be blowing smoke until the access cleaner is gone. (5-10 minutes)
This was the advice I recieved from a dodge mechanic who has helped me out in the past. I hope it will help you.
