Default 1973 Sportsman Backfires under Load

Hi All,

First off, I'm new to the forums and couldn't find a better forum to post this in, if I am incorrect, mod please move me to a better place

I just purchased a 1973 Sportsman Mobile Home, with an immaculate mobile home area for 800.00. Normally I would never consider so old, but at this price we feel it was a steal. In any case, the motor is a 360 with a two barrel carb. It runs quite well at idle, at shifts incredibly smooth. My question however, is that the previous owner mentioned that it needed a new muffler because the "Backfire" had split the old one (which btw is indeed split). I noticed on the test drive it definately has a backfire to it, always under load, but randomly and more when warm. I have checked the easy (plugs, wires, cap and points) and everythign looks good. My next thought is timing and compression checks, but I wanted to ask the experts before going to far. If timing is the suggestion, how in the world do I test it without being able to even see the front of the motor?

Thanks guys, I appreciate any info, and look forward to a new forum!

You either have a weak fuel pump or the timing chain is stretched/worn.
