Default Stalling at Stop Lights

Hi guys,

I have a 99 Ram Van 1500 with a 3.9 that is having a stalling issue. I have a feeling it could be a bad torque converter but I wanted to get some other opinions before I do any repairs.

Here are the symptoms:

The van starts up and runs fine while in park, neutral and while driving. When I put it in drive, the van stalls.

When I come to a stop light, the van stalls.

After the van has warmed up to normal operating temperature, the stalling goes away.

The only trouble code is a P1899 (park/neutral safety switch). I'm unsure if it has anything to do with the stalling issue. I can't seem to get the code to go away. I have replaced the park/neutral safety switch, checked all wiring and replaced the PCM...and I don't know what else to check.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Thanks guys,
Travis

Glad you stated that ... "After the van has warmed up to normal operating temperature, the stalling goes away."

So, the tranny isn't the issue.

You will need to clean the IAC or replace the IAC and clean the two IAC TB port holes.

Follow the DIY step-by-step instructions with photos here to do the easy job.

Where is the IAC located on the engine? Do I need to remove the center console to access it or can I get to it under the hood?

Are you sure there is a IAC on a 99 Ram Van 1500 3.9L? My mechanic didn't think there was one.

In that case I would replace the 2-wire coolant temperature sensor.

Yes, there is an IAC on a 1999. The DIY guide I posted in the link is a 2000 Ram Van with the V6 3.9L. The IAC has not changed since 1994-2003.
