Dash gage sensor does not affect the running of the engine. The one on the other side of the thermostat housing does.

Yes that is unusual. But if the wires to both sensors were pulled on while another repair was made then it could happen.

Thank you!! I got it. It was down behind the alternator. Gage is working and running smooth

It sounds to me like you banged and snapped of the temperature sensor when you replaced water pump and alternator. The sensor is on top of the intake next to the t-stat housing with one wire going to it.
