Has anyone tried the 2 degrees of advance?
Hi all.
Since the engine has finally settled down (thanks to all for your help, advice and ears
) I am going to do the timing chain soon.
I got a Cloyes and it says I can advance the timing 2 degrees. Since this van really doesn't ever see above 3-3.5k RPMS, even at 75MPH, I am thinking of doing it.
I am looking for any advice or opinions please. I would like to pull a small trailer in the future also (1500lbs). I know I only have the 3.9, but after the rollers and new everthing it is running pretty well. I am thinking this update would be worthwhile.
Thanks all.

My Cloyes had 3 keyways too. I was worried if I advanced it I might not be able to pass smog so I chose the middle stock keyway. At least on my year I can twist the distributor to compensate somewhat, but I think on yours, spinning the distributor only affects injector timing.
Looking forward to seeing what others have to day about this

Ah, that will not work with your van. Your van's timing is regulated by the PCM computer and not the distributor. Thus turning 2 degrees will not help, it may hurt dealing with the O2 sensors.
From 1993 and back, this trick would work.
