Default a518 shudder

complete new tune up, A to Z. new torque convertor, new speed sensor, new OD sensor, new fluid , new filter, new O2 sensor, new u-joints, new front tires.

aamaco said it was torque convertor....they were wrong.

this automatic with od. A518

Shifts fine up to last shift then extreme shudder starts, I push the OD button and shudder reduces but with higher rpm.

82,000 miles.

dodge b250 5.2L

Is this bad tranny, bad wire of some sort or what ?

Will it hurt it to continue to drive it ?

Aamco uses their bulk dexron fluid with an additive that they claim takes a dismal performing transmission fluid and magically turns it into a heat resistant synthetic fluid with the proper viscositiy and friction modifiers.

Only ATF +3 or ATF +4 should be used in these transmissions. Aamco will tell you till they are blue in the face that they are right, but they are hideously wrong.

I went through this with them before. It was a stressful nightmare, and the resolution was having a dodge dealer exchange all the fluid with the proper fluid, and not a shudder since.

Aamco are dishonest, uninformed, or ignorant, but likely some combination of all three.

I was told by Advance Auto to use Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc. At $7. per quart. I don't mind trashing the 10 quarts but by removing the pan I can only get to 6 quarts. I really don't want to pay the Dodge dealer their high rates. How can I access the remaining 4 quarts fluid in the torque converter and transmission ? Or am I stuck with going to the dealer. thanks

What most people do is disconnect the tranny cooling line that returns from the radiator cooler and direct the fluid into a bucket. Then run the engine briefly to turn the tranny pump until you get about 4 quarts into the bucket. You might have to pump 2 quarts, refill, then pump the next 2 quarts. This will get out about 99.99% of the bad fluid and should solve the problem.

For the bucket, dumping 4 quarts of water into it and marking the level is a good way to know when you pumped enough fluid.

Personally I've always wondered if compressed air could be used to back flush the torque converter and push the fluid back into the pan. I've never really wanted to risk trashing a tranny to find out.

Last question, the proper transmission line to disconnect would that be the rear line on the a518 transmission that goes into the radiator ? thanks again, Pappy

The pump is on the front of the tranny and behind the torque converter. The tranny input shaft passes through the pump making it turn only when the engine is turning.

Yes, the rear line is the return line that dumps cooled tranny fluid back into the pan.
