2002 dodge ram van 3500 rear end/differential options? as mine is toast
hey all,
my rear end is toast, gears are severly worn, pinion shaft is shot too
.
what options are there for my model? are there interchangable rear ends that I can use from the vehicles?

Just make sure that the JY rear is not in just as bad of shape. There are a lot of bad chrysler rears out there, because people use cheap transmission fluid, and the resulting torque converter shudder smashes the rear to bits. Not literally, but you definitely end up with the same issues.
I bought a 9.25 posi out of a totaled dakota off e-bay 4-5 years back for $50, replaced all the bearings for my 2001 3500 and I enjoy not getting stuck in wet grass anymore.
Very happy.
The trick is setting it up correctly.

I let my local dealer rebuild mine. After checking the salvage yards and the cost of having someone swap it out or doing the work myself, it was just financially smarter for me. The work also has a years warranty. Since I am getting older I felt I needed to let someone else do the heavy lifting and have the headaches.

The Chrysler Corporate 9 tends to be the standard 3.92:1 rear for the 8-lug rear for the B2500 and B3500 after 2000. Ideally, the 3.55:1 would be nice for MPG overall, but the axle wheels are 5-lug and 15-inch tires. There are conversions for the gears in the rear to customize.
A 3.23 to 3.25 would be excellent for MPG, however the torque would be dismal to tow anything or haul a heavy load.
