Default Blown engine, and won't shift

2002 Ram Van 318 cid. 87,000 miles. Transmission not shifting out of first and at the same time the engine was making a huge amount of racket. The transmission never acted up before. But the engine acts up like this from time to time. Thursday it was especially bad. Brought it to an independent mechanic. He said the transmission codes are saying solenoid. BUT the engine codes, says the mechanic, are saying the engine is about blown - pistons. rods. He says the engine is cooked. I don't get it - great maintenance program, oil changed, etc. Low miles. Actually this is the lowest mileage van in the fleet. I have Fords with 330,000 miles and Chevy's with 250,000 miles and no issues.
I think I should get a second opinion. BUT I bet this guy is correct. Engine sounds like a diesel. Any advice? Thanks - Rob

Buy another ford or Chevy if you have better luck or keep opening your wallet for the dodge

Both the engine and tranny problems could be related to a broken torque converter or flex plate.
