i have a 97 ram van 4wd 5.9 Sportsmobile. Could the 5.9 be switched ou and a diesel installed without a boat load of modifications. I'm pretty handy and it seems like a decent way to get better gas mileage/cost of operation

Actually, the diesel conversion is pretty popular. I won't say it's 'easy'..... but, is certainly doable. Drop a 12 valve in there, and it should be pretty straightforward.

What is the weight rating of the van? Don't think they ever did 1500 4x4s? If it's 3/4, or 1 ton, you'll be set.

Thanks for getting back. The Sportsmobile shop in 2006. put their tag on the drivers side door jamb. It is handwritten and then covered with clear film. 3600 lb front axle, 5360 lb rear axle. So I guess that is a 1 ton ? It was done in Fresno (Clovis) in 7/96. I guess I'll transfer over to the general forum and try to get a few more details. I just sold a 96 Ford F350 Long Bed Pickup 7.3 Diesel that I bought new. The 7.3 was up front and well insulated but still fairly noisy. The Dodge installation would be right in between the front seats of the van. The 5.9 gas in it is not real bad on noise, do you think 12 valve as you call it would be real noisy and could you give me a guestimate on MPG, I'll have to look around (u-tube ?) and see if I can find a video on the whole process, I do have a larger shop at my home up in the islands north of Seattle. Seems a rebuilt long block might be about 7-8K. It is now my yearly rig to AZ and back and maybe my last real project.

8 lug wheels would be a sure indication of a heavier duty suspension. If they are five, or six lug, the diesel is gonna be too much weight for that. (in my opinion.)
