Smile Hi guys, just want to intoduce myself

Of course I am new to this, in fact first forum I have ever posted to. My background is 20 years Navy, retired Electronic Technician. Now working as a machine repair electrician. I only put this here so that you know that I have some knowledge of things electrical, but I am by no means an auto mechanic, back yard and garage at best.

Not sure where I should post my question about a starting issue I have with my1992 Dodge Ram 250 van. So if this is the wrong forum for it, just let me know and I will stand corrected for future posts.

Seems that when cold, I don't seem to be getting any spark. The motor turns over fine, until the battery wears down too much. Right now I have a brand new battery, and I also have a 200 amp roll-around charging/starter unit, so I believe I have plenty of power. I am finding that after a period of time, I hear a relay chattering, then after a few minutes of this it will stop chattering and the van will start.

I have replaced the two-relay combination set mounted to the drivers side firewall. I believe that at least one of these is the ASD relay. Looking at the two relays from the front of the engine compartment, it would be the left relay that is chattering. I just tried again after letting things cool down and still get the chattering, after which it stops and I can start the engine.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If there is any extra info you need, please let me know and I will do my best to get it.

Thanks much in advance.

Welcome to DF. I will move this to the Ram van section. They can help you out.

Replace the PCM.

It appears to me, also a Ram Van newbie, that the ECMs on these things do have a somewhat limited lifespan. I replaced mine with a refurb. and it solved my stumbling, then no-spark issues. I also couldn't get a OBD-II code reader to connect before replacing the ECM. There's a shop in Florida that will refurbish your own ECM pretty reasonably. Otherwise, they run a couple hundred bucks.

Have a look at this guys post first though.
