two 94 vans need transmission help
Hello all,
I am a new member here and I came seeking some advice. I am a van guy and I own 2 1994 conversion vans. One is a beater/daily driver that I use like a truck. The other is saved for pulling my travel trailer or road trip fun!!!! My 3rd vehicle is my toy it is a 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider.
The vans are both 1994's and have similiar mileage. I have noticed over the several years of owning them that they have the same problems around the same time.
They both have around 130,000 miles right now and the motors have been rock soild. I have had to replace the tensioners, t-stats, radiator hoses, fuel tank sending units, and AC switch.
All minor repairs now comes the big stuff. On both vans the transmissions are slipping.
The towing van according to build sticker has a 3 speed 32rh. I need help figuring out exactly what this transmission is. I have read it is an a727, and others have said it is some kinda 999. I have also seen 500 and 518 floating around. I know it is a straight 3 speed w no overdrive or lock up converter. My main concern is fixing this one ASAP. Anyone have an idea on a good place to get a rebuilt one from? Also any ideas on what a rebuild would be if I took it to a tranny shop?
The daily driver has a 46rh. This van gets much better mpg. Unfortunately these transmissions have a high price tag.
Everywhere I look it says no 32rh is a 94 van but I know what is on the build sticker. This van was customized by keenans custom coaches out of GA for what its worth.
It really sucks that both transmissions go out with in 2 weeks of one another.
Thanks for the help
Preston

I suggest you change the transmission fluid and inspect the pan. If you have a lot of material in the pan, the clutch packs are probably gone and the transmissions(s) will require rebuilding. Either way I would suggest adjusting the bands per factory spec as this might at least buy you some time.

I believe a fluid change and band adjustment might solve the problem on the one with the 32rh. On the dip stick the fluid looks perfect, and it doesn't slip bad. I am hoping that this will correct the issue.
Can someone post me a link on how to adjust the bands on the 32rh. Preferable one with pics. I love the pics. I know the basics one is adjusted from the outside, and the other you need to remove the valve body. I need some specs etc.... Thanks.
I am also sure the white van is toast. I bought this van from some kids who were in a van, and they had the transmission rebuilt about 5 months before I bought it. I have the receipts cost them 2100 bucks. Anyway the fluid in it looks silver. Its toast. I might just have to bite it and part this one out or sale it whole.
Thanks in advance for the link.

Search Ebay for "1994 dodge ram van service manual" if this this link fails. And yes, you want the full set not just the main manual.
