I removed the solenoid and sensor.there was alot of sludge on the pan magnet but no metal shavings in the fluid but fluid was brownish.
the passage on the top screen on the solenoid was almost blocked.

how do I test the sensor and solenoid

I could be wrong, but I don't think you can test them individually. The best thing I can come up with is to put it all back together, top it off, then run the van while running an OBD scanner to see if it pops codes. Sorry if this doesn't help.
