Been getting an intermittent no start on my b150. Click... no cranking. It would start up after a few tries. I thought it was the ASD, and if I unplugged the relay it would crank but not start. Now it's not cranking regardless of whether the ASD is plugged in or not, so it must be something else. Fusible links look ok, is there anywhere else to look?
Bad starter, bad starter relay/solenoid, bad neutral safety switch...just to name a few possibilities. The next time it won't crank step on the brake and shift to neutral to start it and see if that works.
Going to check neutral switch when I get home, but believe I've tried that. What would cause no cranking with the ASD plugged in, and cracking with it unplugged? I also took the doghouse off at one point and wasn't getting spark, until miraculously I was and it started.
No security system... I think the neutral switch is working. There is a click in Park and Neutral, no click in Drive etc..
I also don't think it's the starter or solenoid, because the last time I wouldn't start for an extended period of time, disconnecting the ASD would allow it to crank.
Pulled the starter relay. I connected pins 1 and 2 to the battery, the relay clicks and pins 3 and 4 show continuity on the multimeter. Relay seems crusty, but good.
Just took off the doghouse, inspected the coil and distributor, and when I randomly tried to start it it fired right up. Shut it off, won't start... just a loud click.
Is the click coming from the starter? If so it's time for a new one or at least a rebuild. The click is the solenoid pulling in, When it does there should be a connection to energize the starter motor. The contacts inside get worn and pitted and that stops the motor from turning(cranking the motor over).

The click is definitely coming from the starter. It seems like the problem is the starter/solenoid, but I'm bothered by the fact that it would crank with the ASD disconnected.
Connect ASD... click. Disconnect ASD... crank, no start. I did it several times and it was cranking with the ASD disconnected!
