Default 1992 B350 Van just shuts off and dies when coming to a stop.

Hi everyone,

I have a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 V8 5.9L Van that has 90,000 miles on it. Whenever I go on longer trips, when I get off the highway and come to a stop, it will just shut off and die as I come to a stop. I have no idea what's causing this and it's super annoying. I have had the transmission serviced, a new IAC, new MAP sensor, cleaned the throttle body, had the fuel injectors serviced and cleaned, new distributor / spark plugs, fuel filter, and a few other things done to it, and the problem remains. When I start it, I have to give it some gas to get it started, and stay on the gas for a minute or so or else the van will putter out and die. When coming to a stop, its like the idle is super low and it just shuts off. It's also completely random, sometimes it happens, other times, its fine.

Anyone have any ideas? I just drove it home from a 3 hour trip and when I pulled into my neighborhood it died.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: forgot to mention that my check engine light is off and has never come on.

Has the TPS been changed or tested?

a new IAC
You mean idle motor don't you? The iac didn't start till the magnums motors in 93. If you have the motor it needs to adjusted if i recall when you replace it.

My '89 5.2l does the same (among other things). It's also hard to start after getting up to highway temps.

I don't think it's the TPS, but it's easy to test. Pull the air cleaner and there are two sensors right on the passenger side, the bottom one is the TPS and you want to test for between 1-5v with throttle closed and open.

It's one of these -

I didn't know they could be adjusted. Any info on how that might be done? I can't find any info.

I did one on my 90 ram. I think you need to adjust the linkage where it comes in contact with it. Don't actually remember exactly but if you watch it when you first start it up you will see it pushes the linkage to keep the idle up.
