Default clunking from drive shaft and differential (2000 B350)

I hear a low, thudding noise from the rear while driving. It was almost rhythmic -- like every time the rear wheel turned -- but not always. I had the universal joint replaced, but still the sound.Things got worse when I had the transmission rebuilt last year (model 46RE).

Now when shifting from park into gear, I hear a clunking / thudding sound in rear. There's also a clunk when even slightly accelerating or decelerating.

Thoughts?

Slop somewhere in the drivetrain. Have you pulled the cover off the rear diff in recent memory? If not, may not hurt to have a look. Also, there are two joints (at least) in the rear shaft..... might be a good idea to check the one that wasn't replaced as well. It doesn't necessarily have to be sloppy to make interesting (alarming....) noises.... if its dry, that will also cause some interesting issues.

I was going to say, I changed the fluid this past weekend and it got rid of my clunking noise when I would go in reverse. I guess a fluid change makes a whole lot of difference!

The diff doesn't have a filter btw. But hopefully that resolves your issue!
