2001 Dodge Ram Van 1500 5.2 130k

I am going on a long road trip, so I am tuning up the van and getting everything in order.

Would anyone suggest replacing the ignition coil as preventive maintenance? I don't have an issue with it but again 130k on the van.

I purchased this NAPA/Echlin part but havent put it on yet:

I’ve never heard that being part of any preventive maintenance. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Keep ipthe new one as a spare until you need it.

 

I agree, just keep it in the back with your emergency socket and wrench set and if it goes bad on the road change it then. What if you change it now and the new one is defective?

Forgot to mention, I did get a check engine light with P0300(random multiple misfire), P0305(5 misfire) and P0308(8 misfire) two weeks ago. I cleared it and it hasnt come back. Not sure if that is necessarily coil related though.

 

If you have one cylinder misfiring, you will still get the P0300...... The PCM really likes that code.

 

A bad coil will usually affect all cylinders, not just one or two.

 

for some reason, I have to replace my ignition coil about once a year, I don't know why, have asked a lot of questions about it, but still no definite answers, I just keep a spare one in my van in case,,,the mechanic who fixed it the first time told me these vans are known for throwing coils early, so it was his suggestion to carry a spare one,,,,very easy to replace if your stuck somewhere,,,,good luck,,,,,
