Default New Van owner brake booster issue

I have a 1978 b200 tradesman maxiwagon with a 5.2 318 V8 4 speed manual transmission. I had to replace the brake booster recently. I found a refurbished unit on AutoPartswarehouse.com and installed it and got all the air out of the unit before connecting it. After hooking up the 2 lines and the hose I tested the pedal and the resistance felt good so I started the car and pushed the pedal lightly, the booster grabbed the pedal and pulled it halfway down and the brakes engage and got disengage as the pedal is remains halfway down. I disconnected the hose and drove the car around the block with no power assist to the brakes and they work. I called customer service at AutoPartsWarehouse and they told me i bought the wrong unit, but I know I bought a unit that is identical to the old one. Should I bother trying to work on the refurbished unit or just try and find something else? Thanks!!

If they think you got the wrong one, have them send you the right one......
